Banquet

October 11th, 2009

Save the date: 6:30-10 p.m. Saturday, October 24.

If you haven’t decided whether to attend the Florida Press Club Awards Banquet,
which celebrates the winners of the annual 2009 Excellence in
Journalism Contest award winners, I would highly recommend making your reservation. We are known — ask anyone — for our terrific banquet and after party. I’d even recommend going if no awards were won, just for the opportunity to network. When is networking a bad thing, especially in this economy? Just try to limit your trips to the call bar when you’re meeting and greeting!

Rooms are also available for an reduced rate at the Rosen Shingle
Creek Resort, 9939 Universal Blvd. in Orlando. E-mail our prez at fpcpresident[at]gmail[dot]com for the prices. It’s been reduced from $125 a night.

This last part is from Jennifer Cason, our president:

The cost to attend the banquet this year will be $40 and can be paid
with a credit card online at our Web site www.floridapressclub.org, or
by cash or check at the door. There will be a call bar from 5:30 to
6:30 during registration and a cash bar for the remainder of the
evening. This year’s entree selections include Chicken Scaloppini, Red
Snapper and Roast Prime Rib of Beef. There is also a vegetarian dish
available. Please email me by Oct. 16 at fpcpresident[at]gmail[dot]com if you
plan to attend and let me know what entree you would like.

Coddington Update

September 19th, 2009

I had this update to “Journalism Generosity” sent to me on my personal blog and thought I would share:

UPDATE: Because of people like you who have been willing to share Steve’s struggle with others, we have raised nearly $20,000.00 for Marian Coddington’s desperately needed therapy. We are deeply grateful for all of the support you have already given Steve and Marian.

Our greatest hurdle has been reaching as many people as we can to help raise the money Steve needs to get Marian the intensive therapies she requires to recover as completely as possible. Marian CAN recover. She is not a vegetable. She is there, trapped in a body she cannot control. But she is in there.

Today, a short video was released by Brave New Films that features Steve and Marian’s story. We appeal to you, once again, to help us. Please, go to the blog (http://savestevesfamily.blogspot.com), watch the video and pass it along to anyone you think might be willing to help. We are already so thankful for the hundreds of people who have gotten us this far. We just haven’t gone far enough yet. But we will. And you can count on it.

PLEASE, tell your Facebook friends about Steve, twitter it out to all your tweeps, share it with your coworkers, but keep telling his story.

Good job!

Journalism generosity

September 4th, 2009

As I wrote in my personal blog:

Steve Coddington is a photojournalist for The St. Petersburg Times. He’s fighting CIGNA to get appropriate care for his wife, who had a subarachnoid hemorrhage. CIGNA, of course, is foiling him in every way, and now Coddington’s wife is getting no care. He’s on leave, taking care of his wife and children. Their money is running out.

If you have the ability to donate or to pass his story on, please go to http://www.savestevesfamily.blogspot.com.

As of now, with the generosity of so many people, they seem to have raised more than $13,000, which came at the perfect time. Steve and Marian’s son is in the hospital preparing for kidney surgery. Donations allowed Steve to be by his bedside, work two days a week and to have help at home.

Keep up the good work!

Another closing

August 25th, 2009

Bob Norman The New Times of Broward-Palm Beach reports The Boca Raton News shut down. Or, basically, shut down since only one person is running the Web site, which is mostly ads.

The Boca Raton News joins a long list of others in Florida, which have gone down: Miami SunPost, Coral Gables Gazette (Online only) and WeekDay, which covered North Palm Beach.

Welcome to the blog

August 25th, 2009

The officers of the Florida Press Club have been looking for ways to make the organization more useful to you, our journalism colleagues. With the industry in turmoil, we wanted a place to discuss all the changes going on in the industry, to share ideas to “save” print journalism and to highlight the good work that is still going on.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Sherry Mims, and I am the membership coordinator of the Florida Press Club. My “real” job is that of copy editor/page designer of The Daytona Beach News-Journal in Daytona Beach. (Yes, I work with Jennifer Cason, the FPC president.) I’ve been in Daytona for just over three years. When I saw how much fun the club was, I volunteered. Before the News-Journal, I worked as the interim features editor of the Daily Commercial in Leesburg (near Orlando). In the spirit of full disclosure, I worked with Megan Shannon, our treasurer, at the Daily Commercial.

It’s not much of a stretch of the imagination to say that in journalism in our fair state, you’re bound to work with people who have worked with other people you know. Probably the most interesting connection I had was with Dianna Wu, our former FPC vice president. She and I saw we had a mutual friend, who lived in Australia, on Facebook. It turned out that she had worked with Jodie O’Brien in Pennsylvania, whereas I had worked with Jodie in Leesburg!

I’ve learned that many of my co-workers have similar stories. Do you?

As we continue this blog, I’d like to encourage members to e-mail me topics, or even better, submit guest posts on journalism. You can find my contact information on the officers’ page.

Thank you for reading!
