Congratulations to Nicholas Zaccardi, a junior journalism major at the University of Florida, who is the recipient of this years’ Florida Press Club Scholarship. Zaccardi receives a $1,000 award from the club.
Here’s what he had to say about himself:
I’m only 19, but working in the sports realm of print journalism has been part of my life for five years.
I started as a sophomore on the school paper at Nease High School in St. Augustine and have climbed the ladder to become a seasoned reporter going into my junior year at the University of Florida.
I’ve covered prep, college and professional sporting events for nearly every major newspaper in Florida, including driving across the state and flying across the country for my beats.
But I haven’t forgotten about my studies; I currently hold a 3.58 grade-point average while balancing a 30-hour per week workload editing stories at the UF college paper, the Independent Florida Alligator, and covering sporting events.
My future goals are to graduate with a degree in journalism, go back to where I grew up and work in the sports department at The Chicago Tribune.
