What do delivery drivers, hotel bellmen, lighthouse keepers and registered dietitians have in common?
They all make more money than Tallahassee Democrat Senior Writer Gerald Ensley.
“To be fair, I never chased a job thinking of the money. I got into journalism because I liked to write,” Ensley says in a Sunday column.
But he says he is still reeling from a discovery that Leon County Commissioner Rudy Maloy’s assistant earns more than he does after 25 years in journalism. “What does it take to be a county commissioner’s aide? You take a few phone messages, stay late one day a week while Bob Rackleff harangues everybody and then deal with Rudy’s comments about how good you look. For that you get $48,000.”
“I’m not looking to be happier than anyone else. I just want to be as happy as I can be,” Ensley said. “Or at least as happy as a County Commission aide.”
