Broward Sheriff Plays Dirty

StaffNews

When Miami Herald reporter Wanda DeMarzo blew the whistle on the Broward County Sheriff’s Office for cooking the books on crime reports, Sheriff Ken Jenne told an aide to spread her DUI record around, the Herald reports.

“They have all this horrible PR in the paper mainly because of Wanda DeMarzo,” said the aide, John deGroot, a former reporter for the Miami Herald and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “The sheriff asked me to go to The Herald or go to one of the journal magazines . . . about Wanda DeMarzo because she had three DUI arrests and he wanted this brought to the attention of the national media to embarrass The Herald.”

DeMarzo’s stories led to the arrest of two deputies who were charged with falsifying crime reports in Weston where the Broward County Sheriff’s Office has a contract to patrol.

DeMarzo was arrested three times since 2000 on DUI charges and convicted once. She says she has been sober for several years.
