Chicago’s legendary City News Service, which traces its history back 124 years and served as a training ground for legions of reporters including Mike Royko, Seymour Hersh and Kurt Vonnegut, will shut down at the end of the year.
“I’m sad for all the young kids that have no place to go for what they learn at City News,” said Paul Zimbrakos, the last editor of the City News Bureau who has run the wholly owned Tribune Company City News Service since it was launched, Editor and Publisher reports.
The Bureau was famous for, among other things, the advice it gave the rookie reporters who passed through its doors.
“If your mother says she loves you, check it out.”
