Federal whistleblower legislation protects government and corporate employees when they come forward with facts about unsavory practices, but nothing protects the reporter who must write the story in order for it to come before the public, NBC News President Neal Shapiro says in the Online Wall Street Journal.
“The law provides confidentiality for psychotherapists, lawyers and doctors. It is high time journalists were added to the list. If sources can’t be assured of confidentiality, they will be reluctant to come forward to the press. And if they don’t confide in the press, wrongdoing could remain undisclosed,” Shapiro writes.
