On Sunday, the Orlando Sentinel published a correction that said the paper “overstated” the number of drug overdoses caused by oxycodone, the active ingredient in OxyContin – by about 300 percent.
A five-day series on the drug published in 2003 said oxycodone overdoses caused 573 Florida deaths in 2001 and 2002. Yesterday the paper said “in roughly three out of four cases, medical examiners concluded that at least one other drug also contributed to the victims’ deaths.”
In February, the paper said the man featured in the series as an “accidental addict” of the drug actually had a federal drug conviction they didn’t know about.
