Orlando Sentinel To Cut Jobs

StaffNews

Publisher Kathy Waltz said in a memo to staff that the Orlando Sentinel will cut a “limited number of positions, some of which are open positions” in the next few weeks.

“The good news is that the Orlando Sentinel serves a growing market and our readership is now at an all-time high and continuing to build,” Waltz said in the memo which was posted on Romenesko.

Normally we hear publishers grumbling about losing circulation and advertising to other media before they start firing people. In fact, Editor and Publisher just reported that the Orlando Sentinel dropped 11 percent of its circulation in the last six months. Maybe Waltz didn’t get that memo.

At any rate, this is the first time we’ve heard a publisher say she is laying off people because the paper is doing so well.
