Susan MacManus has had her name misspelled in newspapers more often than most professional spin doctors get quoted. She was the most quoted Floridain during the 2000 election, according to The St. Petersburg Times.
She is often, quite often, identified as a University of South Florida political scientist or professor. In fact, she has been an advisor to Gov. Jeb Bush, a member of his transition team, and a Bush appointee to the Florida Elections Commission, and a member of the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors, reports Bob Norman in New Times.
“That’s right, she’s a Bushie. Nothing wrong with that, as long as it’s disclosed in the stories. But it almost never is. Instead, reporters routinely identify her only as USF political scientist or professor, which implies an Ivory Tower neutrality,” Norman writes.
Time to update the Rolodex. Make it “USF professor and Bush appointee.”
