The International Committee of the Red Cross submitted a report to the U.S. government saying American intelligence officials have confirmed that it is standard procedure for the U.S. military “to use inhumane and degrading treatment, including physical and psychological coercion” on prisoners of war in order to extract intelligence.
The administration is talking about whether to release more photos (the Washington Post published 10 out of more than 1,000, according to Editor and Publisher) and generals are coming out of the closet saying “It’s over.”
No one is talking about what American journalism did right or wrong today. It isn’t that kind of day. But it soon will be.
Didn’t anybody have sources in the Red Cross? Why didn’t anybody talk to Amnesty International? That organization claims to have documented patterns of abuse against detainees for the last two years. What happened to all the embedded journalists?
Think local. What is the closest relative to the U.S. military in your home town? The Sheriff’s Office?
What is the impact there? Are local police reviewing procedures to ensure that “inhumane and degrading treatment, including physical and psychological coercion” are not standard practice?
