Journalism organizations and individuals have given more than $56,000 to help employees of the Times-Picayune in New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina, reports Editor and Publisher.
“I think it is fabulous, it is fantastic,” said former Times-Picayune employee Nan Varoga, one of the fundraisers. “The issue is that when you divide it up by the need, it is only about $329 each.”
About 170 newspaper employees have requested aid from the fund, she said.
The largest contribution, $8,000, came from the White House Correspondents Association. The Florida Press Club donated $4,000 which represents the entry fees from about 300 contest entries that were to be judged by New Orleans area journalists but were lost to the storm.
