The Charleston Post and Courier‘s Brian Hicks has found that, through years of neglect, the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway is too shallow for commercial boats to pass in many areas and may become virtually useless in a year or two.
The waterway accounts for $10 billion in commerce a year, Hicks reports, and requires about $20 million in maintenance dredging each year. This year, it got $6.7 million and next year the Bush administration proposes nothing – zero – bupkiss.
Half a dozen of Florida’s metros have offices virtually within view of the waterway. So, people, put down your phones, close your browsers and go look out your windows.
