One day after a Paul Krugman column forseeing problems with Florida’s ballotless electronic voting, The New York Times and The Miami Herald report that Dade County voting officials have “lost” the results of the 2002 gubernatorial primary – the first election conducted on new electronic voting machines.
And they didn’t tell anybody.
The loss, the result of two computer crashes, was discovered by a citizens group seeking access to audit data from the election.
“This shows that unless we do something now – or it may well be too late – Florida is headed toward being the next Florida,” said attorney Lida Rodriguez-Taseff, chair of the Miami-Dade Election Reform Coalition.
Now that’s something we can usually count on.
